Transporter bridge: There are only a few transporter bridges left in the world. There were once 20, but today only eight remain in operation. Germany's oldest is located on the Oste River in the municipality of Hemmoor. Its operation and maintenance are the responsibility of the Hemmoor Support Association, founded in 1975 and currently boasting approximately 250 members.

The ferry is not a ship, but a vehicle that travels across a body of water suspended from a fixed support structure. According to the supporting association, there are only eight transporter bridges left in the world. In Germany, another normally operates in Rendsburg across the Kiel Canal. However, due to a technical defect, it will be out of service until at least the end of July, according to the operator. Other such structures exist in Argentina, France, Great Britain, and Spain, according to the World Association of Transporter Bridges.

The Oste Bridge between Hemmoor and Osten is an impressive transporter bridge, considered to be one of the last eight of its kind in the world. This engineering feat from 1909 was originally called the "eighth wonder of the world" and is now a major landmark in the region. The transporter bridge crosses the Oste and connects the town of Hemmoor with the municipality of Osten. The transporter bridge was in operation until 1974 and was then replaced by a fixed bridge on the B 495. Today the transporter bridge is mainly used for tourist trips and is a popular excursion destination. It is operated by a non-profit association that takes care of the preservation of this unique monument. The ferry is also part of the German Ferry Route, which connects various historic ferries and bridges along the Elbe.

On June 17th, 2024, we asked a woman and her dog for directions. We wanted to know if you could cross the bridge on the Wischhafener Süderelbe by bike. But she didn't know her way around. She was probably on vacation in Krautsand. As we continued our journey, a couple came towards us on their bikes and told us that the bridge was closed. We then rode back with them. The woman with the dog on a leash was still standing on the path and we rode past her. Last of all, my wife. The dog snapped and bit my right calf. A relatively small wound became infected and we drove to the hospital in Flensburg on June 20th, 2024, where we were treated. We were advised not to continue our journey by bike. We therefore had to end our cycling trip. Perhaps someone can provide information about the dog owner or has met her. Middle-aged woman, 45 to 50 years old, long dark hair. Dog shoulder height approx. 50 cm, long, mottled black, brown, beige hair.

A really great bike path and almost as wide as the road running parallel to it.

Except for the bridge itself, where the sign says you have to push your bike, the cycle path is much better than the road.
