Unfortunately, the pedestrian zone has now largely died out and is dominated by empty properties. During my visit on Friday afternoon, I was presented with a sad sight during the Advent season. The castle and the museum are very beautiful and recommendable. There is no admission charge, but you can support them with a donation of your choice.

Altena is a beautiful small town on the Lenne. The castle above the city is particularly worth a visit. The Lenne promenade invites you to linger.

Altena Castle is undoubtedly not only the name giver, but also the eye-catcher of the town. It has been on the top of the Wulfsegge since the 12th century. Winding alleys lead from the city center up the hill. But don't worry: the ascent can also be managed wonderfully with the adventure elevator. On the way through the tunnel, visitors are whisked away to almost forgotten times by virtual mythical creatures before they end up in the elevator directly in the courtyard. At the foot of the castle hill, the city center is lined up along the Lenne like a string of pearls. A relatively large number of restaurants invite you to linger on every corner and in the summer months also directly on the water. There are hardly any retail chains that could make Altena's city center confusable with other pedestrian zones. It is much more likely that studios, junk and antique shops will increase. They and the owner-managed shops give the pedestrian zone its own character. Visitors should be told: Altena's charm consists less of high gloss and polish and more of authenticity and down-to-earthness.
