The descent from Chatel to Monthey is sensational! The other way around, however, is hell due to the traffic!

Passage near the Château de la porte du Scex, The architecture of the castle has changed over the centuries, but it still retains medieval elements, such as its thick walls, arched windows and turrets. A little moment of history ;)

Clinging to the mountain above the Rhône, the Château de Saint-Maurice (15th-17th century) has been a venue since 2005 for major temporary exhibitions for all audiences around the theme of drawing, press cartoons and comic. It also presents a permanent exhibition on its history, access to which is commonly available through the temporary exhibition. It is one of the highlights of the exhibition of drawn narration in French-speaking Switzerland. https://www.viefrancigene.org/fr/resource/poi/castello-di-saint-maurice/

The Château de Saint-Maurice, also known as the “Castle of the Governors”, is located at the entrance to Saint-Maurice in the Canton of Valais in Switzerland. This impressive castle is built on the Saint-Maurice Gorge, a location bordered by a steep escarpment on one side and the Rhone River on the other. The castle has a rich history and once played an important role in military and judicial affairs.

The wine museum in the castle is very well done. I recommend really good shoes for the hike.

From the late 11th century onward, there is also evidence of a noble d'Aigle family, who built a castle here. Their property passed to the Lords of Saillon in the 13th century. The most important building in Aigle is Aigle Castle, located on the eastern edge of Le Cloître. Its origins are not precisely known. The castle was probably built by the Lords of Saillon at the beginning of the 13th century. It has a wall with three round towers and a battlement. The oldest part is the square keep, to which several turrets with machicolations were later added. The castle was set on fire by the Bernese in 1475. After its reconstruction in 1489, it became the seat of the governor or bailiff. From 1804 onward, the castle belonged to the municipality and served as a court, prison, and, in part, as a hospital. It underwent extensive restoration from 1971 to 1992. Today it houses two museums: the Musée de la vigne et du vin and the Musée de l'étiquette. Next to the castle stands the large tithe barn (Maison de la dîme), built in 1587 on the site of the former castle of the nobles of Aigle. Source: Wikipedia

Monthey is located in a green valley not far from Lake Geneva and is surrounded by impressive mountains. The parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Immaculée-Conception, the new castle, the armory and the old wooden bridge over the Vièze river are particularly worth seeing. A great hike leads through the Vièze gorge.

As if watching over the Rhone, the Castle of St. Maurice stands at the foot of one of the last mountains just before the Rhone flows into Lake Geneva. The 15th-century castle has enjoyed various uses over time, temporarily destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt and now houses an exhibition of press drawings and comics. Directly above the castle in the mountainside is the Grotte aux Fees, the fairy cave. It has been developed for tourism and is open to visitors. However, it can only be reached via a hiking trail or a cable car a few 100 meters north of the Château de Saint-Maurice.
