Schönhausen Palace Park has two faces: that of a lively, tree-filled public park with a meandering stream and that of a secluded, quiet monastery garden. The reason for this is a wall that divides the park into different areas.

An extensive ditch system west of the Panke is still managed and regulated by the state of Berlin today. There are many hectares of allotment gardens around Blankenburg, through which rainwater drainage ditches run in old routes. The Blankenburg carp ponds, which are affected by the Panke, are located here. They are managed by the Berlin State Anglers Association. On the northern bank of these ponds, the Malchower Fließgraben brings water from a whole system of ditches from the Malchower See to the left of the Panke. This ditch system east of the Panke includes the Schmöckpfuhlgraben, which today brings water from the Heinersdorf freight station site and the allotment gardens northeast of Heinersdorf.

There is always a lot going on here at the weekend. During the week it's fine. Nice little highlight on the Panketal cycle path.

This boardwalk is wonderful to walk on, but not in late autumn when there are a lot of leaves, as it gets slippery

The assumed beginning of the actual Oder-Havel Canal is today's mouth of the Oranienburger Havel. It leads through the Lehnitzsee, which previously did not belong to the Havel, and reaches the Lehnitz lock. The canal continues for the most part following the earlier Malzer Canal and then replaces the older Finow Canal up to its eastern end. Today's Havel-Oder waterway is essentially the waterway from Plötzensee to Hohensaaten that was opened on June 17, 1914 under the name Großschiffahrtsweg Berlin – Stettin.

Beautiful footbridge over the Tegeler Fliess. Quite crowded at the weekend, of course, so it's better to come here during the week.

The Castle Park Niederschönhausen looks back on a long and varied history. Countess Dohna laid out her first garden in the Panke lowlands as early as 1662. At the beginning of the 18th century, the garden was expanded under Frederick I and later the wife of Frederick the Great, Queen Elisabeth Christine, and designed in the baroque style. A ground floor in front of the castle, labyrinths and boskette (hedge quarters) were created. The castle itself was expanded by Johann Friedrich Eosander, and ancillary buildings were built. In the years 1829-31 it was redesigned and expanded to create a landscape park based on designs by Peter Josef Lenné. The park part of the palace is now surrounded by a wall that was built when the palace became the seat of the first president of the GDR, Wilhelm Pieck, in 1949, and later the guest house of the government of the GDR. The majority of the castle park is freely accessible. Old trees, curved paths that follow the course of the Panke, and extensive meadows characterize this part of the park.
