The castle ruins are the ultimate tourist attraction on the island of Bornholm. We were lucky that it was quieter there during the off-season. The view from the ruins is very beautiful, and the hiking trails surrounding them are also not to be missed.

A wonderful relic from earlier days, it's very popular today and can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. The stairs are quite narrow, so watch out for oncoming traffic.

Make a point to explore Hammershus Castle, the largest medieval fortress in Northern Europe. These impressive ruins sit above the Bornholm Coastal Path and are well worth the detour. Offering you breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding landscape as you walk through the remains of the old walls and towers, you can almost imagine the castle in its prime. It served as a symbol of power and was a key part of the island's history. The panoramic vistas from here are perfect for a moment of quiet reflection.

A very large sandy beach accessible by vehicle. There are designated areas where sand yachts, beach buggies, and blokarts are permitted, but cyclists and pedestrians are not allowed to walk there.

Due to heavy silting, the nave was demolished in 1805. The church tower was preserved - initially as a navigation mark - and can be visited. It takes a bit of imagination to imagine how deep the floor of the nave was originally. You can get an idea of this by looking at the remaining arch of the roof vault on the other side of the tower.

The Gefion fountain in Copenhagen shows the statue of the goddess Gefion from Germanic mythology, who is said to have turned her four sons into oxen. The legend says that the ox team tore a large hole in the middle of Sweden while ploughing and hurled the land mass into the Baltic Sea. The hole in Sweden today forms Lake Vänern. The island of Zealand is said to have emerged from the piece of land that was torn out.

The Little Mermaid sculpture is made of bronze and granite stone and is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale about the mermaid who sacrifices everything to be united with the young, beautiful prince on land. Every morning and every evening she rises from the seabed and longs for the prince from her rock in the water. The story of the Little Mermaid is known to many children today not only from Hans Christian Andersen's original version, but also from Disney's version of the same name.
