11월 23, 2024, Holtenau Lock
Opened in 1895, the Kiel Canal has lost none of its appeal: Every year, around 32,000 ships and around 10,000 pleasure boats use the popular federal waterway, which saves them the detour around Skagen. A total of around 85 million tons of goods have been transported through the canal. This makes the Kiel Canal, known internationally as the "Kiel Canal", the busiest sea canal in the world, ahead of the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. Ships up to 235 meters long and 32 meters wide can pass through the canal.

4월 13, 2023, Holtenau Lock
In contrast to the New Holtenau Locks, which are closed by sliding gates, the lock chambers of the old locks are closed at the end by so-called "stemmpaar gates". It is interesting how little mechanical power is needed to move the heavy gates. From 1973 to 1975, the old locks were completely renovated. Even in the first years of the 21st century, the Old Locks had hardly lost any of their importance, because despite the increasingly frequent accidents at the New Locks, it was still possible to lock at least ships up to a certain size through. A great atmosphere right on the Kiel Fjord 💙... If you have swimming trunks, a bikini, a swimsuit or even a SUP under your arm, you can jump directly into the fjord from the Seebar for a small fee 🏊♂️ 🏄♀️...

10월 7, 2022, Kiellinie Promenade
Kiel's beautiful promenade with a wonderful view of the Kiel Fjord has been hidden behind construction fences for years because the sheet pile walls are dilapidated. Construction work is now underway on Kiel's best side. But it remains uncertain when we will be able to enjoy a magical view of both the water and the Kiellinie again 😔... Patience, patience and more patience is required here 😏...

The rudiments of the Old Eider Canal, predecessor of the Kiel Canal, now serve as a drainage canal. The Old Eider Canal was in operation for around 100 years and lost its importance with the advent of steamships. The Imperial Canal Commission once resided in the brick building, which impressively documents the Wilhelminian architectural style. As the successor authority, the Kiel-Holtenau Waterways and Shipping Office now monitors and directs shipping traffic through the canal and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all canal systems. The old locks from 1895 are only in operation in the summer months. Numerous sports boats can be locked in about 30 minutes from May to September. A colorful range of vintage ships to modern motor yachts is represented.
