It's worth walking around the outside, you can see some very beautiful old buildings

The churchyards of the former fortified church in Donnersdorf most likely date back to the early Middle Ages. Donnersdorf was first mentioned in a document in 779. From these and later documents, it can be concluded that Donnersdorf, with its 24 farms, also had its own church with corresponding fortifications in the 8th/9th century.

The farms first documented in the 14th century belonged to the nearby Zabelstein Castle complex. However, agricultural conditions on the ridge were not favorable, and the farms were abandoned around 1840. Remains include the preserved cistern, the dried-up village pond, and some remains of walls. The fields and meadows are now all overgrown with forests.

At just under 20 meters, the Zabelstein observation tower isn't all that tall, but its gratings in the floor and on the balustrade create a somehow incredibly airy feeling. The view is fantastic. Even if you can't see the Main River itself, you still have a wonderful view of the Main Valley. On a clear day, the Thuringian Forest, the Gramschatz Forest, and Franconian Switzerland can be seen on the horizon. The tower is the great-grandchild of the first observation tower on Zabelstein. The first tower (1956-1978) resembled a 15-meter-high hunter's lodge. The second (1978-1999) and third towers (1999-2019) were also made of wood. The new tower, erected in 2020, is the aforementioned grating structure, framed by wooden struts that widen outwards.

The beautifully designed steele fits perfectly into the landscape.

Very finely crafted wayside cross.

Pope Benedict XVI expressed the following thoughts during the Stations of the Cross meditation (Good Friday 2010) in the Colosseum in Rome, which may also be of interest to those passing by here in front of this wayside cross (crucifix): "He [Jesus Christ] knows that his death becomes the source of life, just as the seed must break open in the earth so that the plant can grow: "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit" (John 12:24). Jesus is the grain of wheat that falls into the earth, is torn open, breaks open, dies and can therefore bear fruit. Since the day Christ was raised on the cross, the cross - apparently a symbol of abandonment, loneliness, failure - has become a new beginning: from the depths of death rises the promise of eternal life.
