The Alter Main nature reserve is a valuable refuge for rare animal and plant species. It is located in the Kitzingen district in Lower Franconia and covers an approximately 10 kilometer long section of the old Main, which was separated from the new Main by the construction of the Main-Danube Canal. The area is characterized by a high diversity of habitats, such as riparian forests, wet meadows, reed belts and gravel banks. Beavers, kingfishers, black storks, otters and numerous species of dragonflies can be found here. The nature reserve is also a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers who want to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this river landscape.

The Grafenrheinfeld Nuclear Power Plant (KKG) was in operation from 1982 to 2015. It is located south of Schweinfurt near Grafenrheinfeld in Lower Franconia, on the left bank of the Main River. Construction began in 1974 by Bayernwerk AG, and commissioning took place on December 9, 1981. It is a third-generation pressurized water reactor (“pre-Konvoi” plant) with a gross electrical output of 1,345 megawatts. Annual electricity production averaged over ten billion kilowatt hours. It is operated by PreussenElektra GmbH, based in Hanover. The nuclear power plant has two widely visible cooling towers, each 143 meters high. A newly built interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel elements began operation on March 1, 2006. The nuclear power plant was shut down on June 27, 2015. On August 16, 2024, the two cooling towers were demolished. Source: Wikipedia
