The stone gate, built in Gothic style in 1270, is one of the 22 gates that used to be connected by the city wall and formed the city fortifications of Rostock's city centre. According to tradition, the Steintor was a high, slender city gate of a similar size and shape to the Kröpeliner Tor, which is much better known today.
