The bridge was part of the Leinefelde–Wulften railway line, also known as the Lower Eichsfeld Railway. The Wulften–Duderstadt section was opened on November 1, 1889.

Nickname "Bimmelbrücke": The bridge got its popular name because the train constantly rang its bell ("bimmelte") when crossing the iron Oder bridge to warn of the many unguarded level crossings.

Not much remains of it. These are ruins, some of which have been renovated. The lookout tower is closed, and there's no viewing platform or anything like that. Nevertheless, it's a good place to take a break (there are benches and a table) and enjoy the old ruins. An information panel is also available if you'd like to read a bit about the site.

Ideal for a rest on the cycle path

Straight, smooth surface. Also suitable for inline skates.

The Rieswarte is a fortification built in the 15th century. It also served as an observation and early warning tower.
