Freiberg was the richest city in Saxony in the 15th century and to protect its value, a city wall with 5 city gates and 41 city towers was built. Today only 8 towers and the Donatstor are preserved. The Donatstor was the oldest and only intact city gate. The name came from the Donatskirche, which was opposite. The gate was rebuilt in 1963 to preserve the romantic charm of the city wall.

In the 15th century, Freiberg was the richest city in Saxony and accordingly great value was placed on fortified fortifications. Although the city gates were demolished in the 19th century, significant remains of the city wall have survived to this day. The Donatsturm, a 35 meter high tower near the Jakobikirche, is the most impressive tower and at the same time part of the city wall. It was built in the 15th century as the only round tower to protect the Donattor.
