The old raft harbor at the Hochablass is a historic site on the southeastern edge of Augsburg – where nature, technology, and history intersect in a special way. ⚓💧 It is located below the Hochablass, exactly where the Lech River is dammed and the water is diverted into canals – such as the Hauptstadtbach and Neubach. The raft harbor once served as a timber rafting center, which played an important role until the 19th century: Timber, lime, grain, and other goods were transported via the Lech to Augsburg and further towards the Danube. In the harbor, the rafts were assembled or disassembled before continuing downstream. Today, only the still water basin, framed by old trees and bridges, reminds us of this time. The place has a very unique atmosphere – tranquil, almost otherworldly, a bit like a portal into Augsburg's early water world. 🌲🌊

The Hauptstadtbach is one of the most important canals in Augsburg's water management system – a true centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. 💧 It branches off from the Lech River at the Hochablass, where the water is diverted over the historic barrage. From this point, it feeds several other streams, including the Neubach, the Bauhofbach, and the Proviantbach. These canals carry the Lech water further into the city and feed Augsburg's extensive network of waterways. The Hauptstadtbach was created in the Middle Ages to provide hydropower for mills and drinking water for the city. It was, in a sense, the "main conduit" for the city's water distribution – hence its name. Today, it flows peacefully through the Siebentischwald Forest and, with its tributaries, forms one of Augsburg's most beautiful running and walking routes – a quiet, clear testament to centuries of engineering and sustainable urban planning. 🌿

The Umlaufgraben is a beautiful, tranquil watercourse in the south of Augsburg – a hidden gem of the Siebentischwald forest. 🌿💧 It branches off from the Lech River at the Galgenablass and winds its way through the forest as a narrow, gently meandering channel, lined with ancient alders and beeches. Its water flows quietly, clear, and cool – almost motionless – until it returns to the Lech River further downstream. The name "Umlaufgraben" (circulation ditch) already suggests that it is part of a water circulation system: It was once created to regulate water levels and prevent flooding, but also to make the water usable – for example, for engines, irrigation, or cooling. Today, the path along the Umlaufgraben is an idyllic spot for walkers, runners, and nature lovers: tranquil reflections, birdsong, the rustling of leaves – a touch of peace in the middle of the city. 🌲✨
