The first Catholic service was held in Osterfeine in 1855; In 1856, the Osterfeine Chapel Congregation was formed. Initially, services were held in the schoolhouse. The Dammer Bergsee is a unique feature of the Dammer Hills landscape. The lake was artificially created. Iron ore was mined approximately one kilometer away between 1939 and 1967. In order to recycle the sludge produced during the processing of the iron ore, a drainless reservoir was created in 1953 as a treatment pond, today's Dammer Bergsee. As recently as the 1970s, the landscape resembled an abandoned open-cast mine more than a natural paradise. Nature has since reclaimed the area. The Dammer Bergsee has been a nature reserve since 1995. It has become a popular local recreation area for walkers, athletes, and hikers. The Laurentius Chapel is a Protestant church built in 1905 in the neo-Gothic style. The chapel does not have its own organ. "We would like a small one, especially for church services, but then we would also need an organist," said Ursula Pohlschneider. Nevertheless, the small church has a very special atmosphere; it is often requested for weddings, baptisms, and church services. "Catholics are also welcome to use it." However, space is limited; the pews only accommodate 50 to 60 people. The last major renovation work began in 1990. Prior to that, the building, despite its prominent location in Damme, had led a rather shadowy existence since 1965. Since then, it served as a mortuary. From the 1970s onward, the chapel was completely closed. Then a group of seven women came together, who quickly dubbed themselves the "Chapel Women." They wanted to awaken the church from its slumber, make it accessible to the public, and once again become an integral part of the life of the Protestant parish. It was thanks to their commitment that not only was the threatened demolition averted, but that the renovation began in 1990, said Ursula Pohlschneider. The women tirelessly raised money for the renovation. The renovation lasted until 1995. Much happened. The chapel women themselves uncovered parts of the old paint, which had long since been painted over white. "There were five layers of paint on top." A vine thus exposed served as the basis for the newly painted vines around the church windows. But one thing the chapel, like an organ, didn't get during the renovation: a water connection. "That's why we always have to bring water with us for cleaning." The chapel women take turns dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping before services. They are busy with this for about two hours each time.
