The history of Baronie Cranendonck goes way back in time. Around 1250 a castle was built on the edge of the Cranendonck forest. This castle came into the possession of the Oranges in the middle of the 16th century. This remained so until the French period. Although the castle was destroyed by the French in 1673, there are still remains of the ruins in the ground. On top of these foundations of the castle, the contours of the former fortress have been made visible by means of earthen walls. After the French period, the estate and the grounds around it belonged to various private owners.
