In 1866, F.H. Kuipers, a native of Akkrum, emigrated to the United States, where he became a wealthy businessman. There's a recent sign saying they want fast cyclists on the bypass. Don't let this deter you; cycle through this beautiful village. If you really want to cycle 35+, you probably don't care about the surroundings anyway, and I would definitely recommend taking the bypass.
