The man honored here with a monument (albeit a strangely depicted one, though the distorted representation of his person seems to be artistic license) is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – known to many as "Mahatma Gandhi" (the epithet means "great soul" in Sanskrit) – one of the great figures of the Indian subcontinent. He was born in 1869 and assassinated in 1948. His great concern – one should really call it his life's work – was achieving India's independence from Great Britain. Unlike many other Indians who pursued the same goal through violent means, Gandhi was an uncompromising advocate of nonviolent resistance. The Grote Kerk is a church from the 17th century. It is somewhat hidden between the houses, but the church tower is still visible from afar.
