Rook with a Book – A Scenic Stop Right by the Fowey Ferry If you’re bikepacking through South Cornwall and looking to cross the River Fowey, this spot combines function with a bit of culture. Just meters from the Polruan passenger ferry landing, you’ll find “Rook with a Book” — a striking metal sculpture created by Thrussells, celebrating local author Daphne du Maurier. While the sculpture might resemble an eagle at first glance, it’s actually a rook — a clever symbol of intelligence and storytelling, fitting for the town where du Maurier wrote some of her most famous works, including The Birds. The sculpture, named Isla, overlooks the estuary and makes a great place to pause before or after your ferry ride. 🧭 Bikepacker Tips: • The Polruan Ferry is just a few steps away and usually allows bikes, though space can be limited at busy times or during high tide. • Need a sturdier crossing? The Bodinnick vehicle ferry is just upriver and better for loaded rigs. • Fowey offers a solid resupply opportunity — with cafés, food shops, and great views. • The sculpture makes a great landmark and rest stop with benches nearby and panoramic views across the estuary. 📸 Look out for buzzards or kestrels overhead — while there are no eagles here, the wild birds and sweeping views add to the atmosphere of this uniquely Cornish crossing point. 📍Fowey waterfront – sculpture and ferry landing are just meters apart

This is a nice tranquil location. It is a relaxed place where people are walking about, sitting drinking and eating at cafes and outside of restaurants and bars. The are different statues and features, it os decorated quite well. The big bird is one example

Whole ride great. Except the Single track from Golant cross roads to the top of Penventinue. Unless it’s emtb you will struggle. Steep, muddy, overgrown and slippy. It’s a challenge! Counted 23 hills of 10 to 15% plus. It’s hilly, excellent short trainer. Not sure if it was fun🤔.

The church bells still ring every 15mins throughout the day and night so take some earplugs if you are staying nearby and want a decent nights sleep. Lovely church though…

7월 12, 2022, Roche Rock Chapel Ruins
Roche Rock is a granite outcrop looming 20m high. On top of the rock is the ruin of a chapel built in 1409. There are plenty of legends surrounding the chapel. It is thought to have been lived in by a hermit and his daughter, hence another popular name for it being Roche Rock Hermitage. In medieval times it is said to have been occupied by a landowning family who had leprosy and wanted to protect loved ones from catching it. The demon of Jan Tregeagle, an evil Cornish magistrate who was said to have made a pact with the devil in return for power, fame and success, tried to hide at Roche Rock after being set a series of impossible tasks to keep him out of hell until Judgement Day. When the wind is blowing you might even hear wailing coming from the chapel walls.

7월 12, 2022, The Cornish Alps
The Cornish Alps is a name given locally to this area which certainly has an alpine feel, even if not the high altitudes and ski stations. The Cornish Alps are a side effect of the china clay industry which creates massive spoil heaps, known as sky tips. Some, like Carluddon, just north of St Austell, are a distinct pyramid shape, while others blend more into the environment. An area of Cornwall very little visited but certainly worth cycling through.

On the south coast of Cornwall lies Fowey, a small British town that is a popular day trip and holiday destination. It stretches a mile along the steep hills along the west bank of the River Fowey to its mouth in the English Channel. As a result of the numerous wars waged by King Edward I of England towards the end of the 13th century, the traditional Cinque Ports in south-east England were increasingly the target of enemy raids. That is why the ports in south-west England gained in importance, especially as they were also more favorable for trade with Gascony, which at that time belonged to England. Among the ports that thrived around this time was Fowey, which not only became a major trading port but also served as a base for numerous military expeditions. Today Fowey is an important seaport. The mouths of the River Fowey and the Pont Pill form a protected natural deep water harbor accessible in all weather and tidal conditions. The port is home to around 1500 boats and is a popular sailing destination. Annually in August, the week-long Fowey Royal Regatta takes place, one of the most famous sailing events in Great Britain. Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Queen have already taken part in the regatta Elizabeth II.

Very tourist centric. Expensive. Good parking on the outskirts, not fun to drive through. Has a ferry to Mevagissey - best to book in advance.

Fowey is a traditional town located at the mouth of the river Fowey. The Coast Path leads from Fowey to the Gribbin Tower at the Polperro Herritage Coast. The town has been in existence since before 1300; the estuary of the River Fowey forms a natural harbour which enabled the town to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbour. The Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway brought China clay here for export too.
