The oldest house in the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley, the Maison du Lieutenant is now an interpretation center dedicated to mountain agriculture, its environment, its products, and its expertise. A space for living and sharing, it offers a comprehensive and varied program of activities, workshops, and outings throughout the year to (re)discover the richness of our region: Alpine cultural heritage, farms and mountain pastures, natural spaces, and the tastes and flavors of Mont Blanc. Throughout the year, visit the Maison du Lieutenant with your family, its permanent and temporary exhibitions, and explore the region through the many activities and outings on offer.

A beautiful family hike below Les Fiz and Pormenaz, with a beautiful view of Mont Blanc and the valley. From here, you can access Lake Pormenaz via three trails, including "La Chorde," reserved for those with mountain feet, with cable passages and ladders, and "Les Argentières," a less challenging route with cable passages and steps, and then the one passing through the Pierre à l'Ours on the mountainside.

From Les Houches, the exceptional panorama of the Aiguilles de Chamonix is captivating. The Mont-Blanc tramway, one of the last cogwheel railways in France, passes over the town. Its final station in summer, Nid d’Aigle, located at an altitude of 2,372 metres, is the starting point for the “usual” route for the ascent of Mont Blanc. In this small town there are several places to stay overnight if you are doing the Tour du Mont Blanc.

Around 1730, the territory of Les Houches formed a new parish, separated from that of Chamonix. It was placed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist, perhaps in connection with pastoralism. It was consecrated in 1766. Its exterior architecture is characterized by its sobriety, undoubtedly adapted to the harsh climate. Its façade presents all the usual characteristics of the Baroque style: the monumental portal surmounted by a pediment, the niches sheltering modern statues of saints, the triple bay or Serlian and finally the bull's eye located under the wide eaves. The bell tower is surmounted by a bulbous spire that dates from 1839. Inside, you will discover a single nave with groin vaults, a central wooden altarpiece, sculpted and painted by Jean Baptiste Bozzo. The stained glass windows and the Stations of the Cross are works from the 1930s.
