The first document mentioning Colmar comes from the year 823, when Louis the Pious donated to the monastery of Münster a plot of land from the region Columbarium. Colmar has to yield and becomes a royal city in 1678 by the Nimogue Treaty, but the city is still allowed to keep some of its privileges. Colmar is slowly becoming French ... Colmar becomes the seat of the Haut-Rhin prefecture.  In 1870 Colmar and its region are ceded to Germany. After 1918, the city belongs again to France, to be under German rule again in World War II.
