Beautiful mountain lake surrounded by forest.. a break in the cool water is worth it

The Lac du Ballon owes its name to the summit at the foot of which it is located, the Grand Ballon, the highest point in the Vosges. Embedded in a glacial cirque, it offers a setting of all splendor, the reflections of the sun making its surface shimmer in an alternation of shadow and light created by the rich surrounding vegetation. Although natural, it is forbidden to bathe there because it is used to supply water to the valley.

From its 1272 meters high, the Petit Ballon is certainly one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the Vosges massif. Its vast expanse of high stubble and the absence of adjacent summits allow it to dominate the landscape at 360°, and in particular the plain of Alsace to the east with the Black Forest in the background. The ideal place to admire the sunset, especially since several farm inns are within walking distance to enjoy a delicious marcaire meal and/or spend the night. Less touristy than the large Vosges ridge facing it, the Petit Ballon provides an authentic mountain feeling, with its Tibetan flags, its statue of the Virgin and its Vosges breed cow farms.

The path that leads to the Grand Ballon is absolutely essential. First for its destination, but above all for the variety of landscapes you cross: dense forests, ridge paths, balconies. Pure hiking as we like it!

Rocky trail between the Grand Ballon (Big Belchen - 1424 m) and the Ferme Auberge du Haag mountain inn (1232 m). Except for a small piece through a very beautiful beech forest, there are great views. It also leads directly past the Belchenkopfwand. Nearby is also the Source du Rennenbach.
