Großharthau Castle originated from a former medieval moated castle. A manor house was documented in 1241, a knight's court in 1350, and a manor in 1566. In the first half of the 18th century, the castle and manor were rebuilt, incorporating the structural fabric of the former moated castle. The new Baroque complex saw several changes of ownership, with the von Flemming, Vitzthum von Eckstädt, and von Einsiedel families, among others, claiming the castle as their own. In 1945, the castle was looted. In early 1946, a fire broke out in the castle, which was subsequently used to salvage building materials. The last remnants were finally demolished in 1948. The manor buildings and the gatehouse serve as residential areas; this area is accessible to a limited extent.
