This church in Bergrheinfeld is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Under the patronage of "Mater Dolorosa", we usually refer to this title for Mary in German as the "Sorrowful" or "Sorrowful Mother of God". In the depictions that correspond to this, Mary is usually surrounded by seven swords that stab her in the body or heart. Its biblical origin can be found in the Gospel of Luke, where Simeon says to Mary about her son Jesus Christ: "Behold, this man is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel. And he will be a sign that will be spoken against, and a sword will pierce through your soul..." (Luke 2: 34-35)
