A great offer and, above all, great sandwiches that help you survive a food desert. The croissants are great, as is the pain aux raisins!

8월 20, 2024, Chapelle des Templiers
When you enter, take note of the well-preserved death statue of Guillaume de Harcigny (14th century). This healer learned his trade from Arab doctors in Syria. He was the personal physician of Charles VI and a psychoanalyst avant la lettre. The commandery of the Order of the Temple dates from the 12th century, housed the administration and served as a recruitment centre for monks-knights. After the order was abolished, the commandery came into the hands of the Hospitallers of Jerusalem. The cemetery of the Templars is now a garden. The Romanesque chapel with its bell tower and a choir that ends in an apse with a semi-dome are well preserved. Inside, you can see two statues of prophets from the facade of the cathedral.

8월 20, 2024, Tour penchée
The Tour Penchée in Laon, also known as the “Leaning Tower,” is a historic tower located in the city of Laon in the Hauts-de-France region. The tower is part of the city’s old fortifications and is located near the Porte de Soissons. What makes this tower special is its distinctive leaning structure, reminiscent of the famous Tower of Pisa. Visitors can climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city, including the beautiful Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon.

The Porte de Soissons is a medieval city gate in Laon. It is one of the three remaining city gates of Laon and was built at the beginning of the 13th century when the fortifications were resumed. The gate is located in the south-west of the medieval city and is built of sandstone and limestone. The gate was originally known as the Porte Saint-Martin or Soibert, but was later renamed after the nearby town of Soissons. The rear of the gate (which was demolished in 1895) offers a cross-section of this type of defensive system: a vaulted room on the first floor, giving access to the harrow and the machicolation.

The church has light walls and a dark roof. The interior is composed of white walls, pretty stained glass windows and a starry blue ceiling at the level of the heart. 3 bells exist and are functional. Nearby are some tombs, including that of the painter Maxime David.

The Église Saint-Martin in Laon, located in the Aisne department, France, is an impressive example of medieval architecture. Let's look at the history and features of this church: Historical background: Construction of the Église Saint-Martin began in the second half of the 12th century. It was originally intended for a congregation of Premonstratensians. The construction followed a chronological order: first the choir (around 1160), then covered with a wooden roof between 1226 and 1240, followed by the transept and the nave. Around 1190 the original wooden roof was replaced by a vault supported by buttresses. The southern facade of the transept was also built. Construction of the towers continued until the end of the 13th century, with the original spiers removed in 1605. The western facade was only started around 1270. In addition, an abbey palace and a pavilion were built in the garden, known as the “vide-bouteilles” (bottle rack), between 1616 and 1621. After the French Revolution: After the French Revolution, the church became a parish church, while the other buildings were transformed into a hospital in 1810. In 1944 a bombardment was carried out which destroyed all the surrounding buildings, exposing the medieval facades of the cellar and refectory. The building was classified as a historic monument in 1862 and registered in 1951.

Here, the city walker will find an early masterpiece of Gothic architecture, a style often found in this part of France – Chartres and Reims, for example, attract enthusiastic international visitors and are far more famous than Laon. In the following 13th century, many Gothic churches were built, not only in their country of origin, France, but also beyond the country's borders, where this sky-high, light-filled architectural style was now in great demand for new churches (for example, the laying of the foundation stone for Cologne Cathedral in 1248).

The cathedral stands in the old town of Laon on Table Mountain and can be seen from afar. The detailed front and the balanced proportions make the building worth seeing from the outside. But you should definitely take your time and look inside one of the earliest Gothic masterpieces. The feeling of space in the light-flooded church is amazing. There are many side chapels, beautiful stained glass windows, remains of the interior painting and much more to admire. We were thrilled!

9월 27, 2022, Porte de Soissons
This fortified gate of the urban enclosure closed one of the main accesses to the west of the medieval town. It was built between 1217 and 1236 by a certain Garnerius and topped by a guardhouse in 1562. The Soissons gate collapsed, on the town side, in 1895: we can thus guess the internal organization of a defensive gate with in the center of the 1st floor a large vaulted room where the guards in charge of the portcullis were installed. A spiral staircase served the different levels and allowed the soldiers to climb to the machicolations under the roofs. Despite its damage, it remains a fine example of medieval military architecture. http://laon.fr/VILLE_LAON_21_WEB/FR/Accueil.awp?page=106&m=3.21.257

The cathedral was built on the site of previous churches, including a Carolingian church that was consecrated in the presence of Emperor Charlemagne in 800, and a Romanesque church. The current building is one of the oldest Gothic structures in the country; only the cathedrals of Saint-Denis and Noyon are older. Notre-Dame of Paris is slightly younger. The cathedral was built between 1155 and 1235. In the 14th century, 27 chapels were added between the buttresses; in the 16th and 17th centuries they were more separated by walls. In the same century, the facade of the southern arm of the transept was also modified by adding two portals with frontals and a high window.[1] In 1772 the central portal was raised to allow for larger processional canopies. A major restoration was started in 1853; the work lasted until 1914, partly due to damage from an explosion in 1870. The portals of the west facade The church has three facades with portals, not only a monumental west facade as usual, but also facades on the north and south sides. One of the original seven towers was also demolished during the French Revolution. Another tower was lost in a lightning strike in the 18th century. Two remain on the front facade, one each at the side walls and a fifth at the intersection of nave and transept. The highest is the southern Tour de l'Horloge (60.5 m). With its large number of towers, the cathedral is still in the Romanesque tradition (compare Tournai). The early Gothic cathedral of Laon probably had a major influence on the development of Gothic architecture in France and beyond
