9월 12, 2025, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon
The present Notre-Dame de Laon cathedral is the heir to an ancient building, built under the Carolingians and destroyed during the communal insurrection of 1112. Completed around 1235, the cathedral underwent a major restoration in the 19th century, and again in the 2000s. Note that since September 3, 2021, the building has been home to a “Blueberry of Memory” (a work of art by artist Matt Seaward) offered by the Bishop of Durham (UK) in memory of the soldiers who fell in the First World War.

7월 30, 2025, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon
Here, visitors will find an early masterpiece of Gothic architecture, a style often found in this part of France – Chartres and Reims, for example, attract enthusiastic international visitors and are far more famous than Laon. In the following 13th century, many Gothic churches were built, not only in their country of origin, France, but also beyond the country's borders, where this skyward-striving, light-filled architectural style was now in great demand for new churches (for example, the laying of the foundation stone for Cologne Cathedral in 1248).

6월 17, 2025, Pierre commémorative de Craonne
This memorial stone, located on the Plateau de Californie above the old Craonne, commemorates the fierce fighting of April-May 1917 during the Nivelle Offensive. It stands on the spot where the French army suffered heavy losses in the battle against the German defenses. The stone also pays tribute to the destroyed village of Craonne, which was not rebuilt after the war. The site is closely linked to the famous “Chanson de Craonne”, the pacifist song of the French soldiers

On a raised point along the Chemin des Dames, on the site of the former Moulin de Vauclerc, stands a stone statue of Napoleon Bonaparte, erected in 1974. It marks the spot where Napoleon observed the Battle of Craonne on 7 March 1814, during the French campaign against Russian and Prussian forces. The battle claimed more than 12,000 lives. The emperor is depicted looking out over the horizon – a symbol of strategy, battle and memory.

5월 13, 2025, Ferme d'Hurtebise War Memorial
On the eastern edge of the Chemin des Dames plateau lies the Ferme d’Hurtebise, a place that played a crucial role during both the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War. In 1814, it was the scene of the Battle of Craonne, and exactly a century later it again became a strategic junction in the struggle between French and German troops. From September 1914 onwards, fierce fighting took place here. The farm overlooked the Ailette and Aisne valleys, making it a fiercely contested observation post. French units, including Zouaves and the 12th and 49th Infantry Regiments, tried to hold or retake the farm, often with heavy losses. The family that owned the farm sheltered in the cellar for days while the building was under fire. After months of fighting and bombardment, the farm was reduced to ruins, crisscrossed by trenches. Today the site is a symbol of resistance and sacrifice, and is part of the Chemin des Dames memorial landscape.

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is listed as a historical monument: nave from the twelfth century, square tower of the crossing from the thirteenth century, traces of fortifications on the walls of the transept and on the bell tower from the fifteenth century. The rose window was influenced by that of the cathedral Notre-Dame de Laon.

Vorges is a small village located approximately 6 km south of Laon, in the Hauts-de-France region. The village has a rich history dating back to Roman times, when it was part of the territory of the Rèmois, a Gallic tribe. In the 5th century, the Germanic and Frankish people settled in the area, which led to the further development of the village. During the early Middle Ages, under the rule of Clovis and the influence of Bishop Saint Rémy, Christian influence began to grow in Vorges. Archaeological excavations have uncovered Merovingian tombs, which contain some of the first Christian cemeteries in the region. In the 12th century, Vorges was mentioned in several historical documents and had a thriving wine-growing sector with 512 vineyards owned by various abbeys. The village also has a fortified church, built between 1180 and 1230, which was reinforced during the Hundred Years' War to withstand attacks from the English and Burgundians.

8월 20, 2024, Porte d'Ardon
The Porte d’Ardon is one of the medieval city gates of Laon. The current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally, this gate was called “Porte Royée” because of its proximity to the royal palace of Laon. The gate consists of a châtelet with a portcullis and used to have doors. There was also a barbican, but this has now disappeared. Under the gate there was a fountain and wash houses, some of which still exist. The Porte d’Ardon was classified as a historical monument in 1909.

8월 20, 2024, Chapelle des Templiers
When you enter, take note of the well-preserved death statue of Guillaume de Harcigny (14th century). This healer learned his trade from Arab doctors in Syria. He was the personal physician of Charles VI and a psychoanalyst avant la lettre. The commandery of the Order of the Temple dates from the 12th century, housed the administration and served as a recruitment centre for monks-knights. After the order was abolished, the commandery came into the hands of the Hospitallers of Jerusalem. The cemetery of the Templars is now a garden. The Romanesque chapel with its bell tower and a choir that ends in an apse with a semi-dome are well preserved. Inside, you can see two statues of prophets from the facade of the cathedral.

Craonne is special among the memorial sites for France. In addition to the tragic destruction of the place, this has to do with the unfortunate battle, the errors of the army leadership and the soldiers' protests. A testimony is the famous song "Chanson de Craonne".

1월 6, 2024, L' abbeye de Saint-Martin
The Église Saint-Martin in Laon, located in the Aisne department, France, is an impressive example of medieval architecture. Let's look at the history and features of this church: Historical background: Construction of the Église Saint-Martin began in the second half of the 12th century. It was originally intended for a congregation of Premonstratensians. The construction followed a chronological order: first the choir (around 1160), then covered with a wooden roof between 1226 and 1240, followed by the transept and the nave. Around 1190 the original wooden roof was replaced by a vault supported by buttresses. The southern facade of the transept was also built. Construction of the towers continued until the end of the 13th century, with the original spiers removed in 1605. The western facade was only started around 1270. In addition, an abbey palace and a pavilion were built in the garden, known as the “vide-bouteilles” (bottle rack), between 1616 and 1621. After the French Revolution: After the French Revolution, the church became a parish church, while the other buildings were transformed into a hospital in 1810. In 1944 a bombardment was carried out which destroyed all the surrounding buildings, exposing the medieval facades of the cellar and refectory. The building was classified as a historic monument in 1862 and registered in 1951.
