The port of Larrau is one of the 5 large ports of the Pyrenees. Not only is it one of the toughest ports (on the French side); It is one of the ports with the greatest scenic beauty, enjoying the authentic wild and rugged Pyrenees. The two slopes are different in terms of hardness and landscape. You have to try both options and decide which one you like best. The Port of Larrau is included in 2 marches: IratiXtrem and Larra Larrau. I also recommend both marches: impeccable organization and hard and beautiful routes. And remember: the Pyrenees must be respected and kept clean.

Having been over this Col in 2003 during the Etape du Tour that was 205 kms in length, i can tell you on a warm day this is a formidable climb that can quickly sap your strength, the descent is fast and rewarding, just remember to keep your eyes on the road !

The path connects with the normal route up from the Larrau pass and ends the ascent on the west side of the peak. The top has a geodesic vertex and a beautiful metal mailbox dedicated to the legend of the “orhi” bird, which has quite a presence and meaning in the mythology and popular music of Navarrese folklore. The summit is a spectacular corridor with large lateral abysses and extraordinary views. The descent follows the ridge to the south and descends along a clear path with a fairly steep slope until it connects with the main route and the GR-12 path. This section is a great reward for the effort made to overcome the thousand meters of positive elevation gain from the Irati forest to the top.
