A "chemin de halage", in German "treidelpfad", which runs alongside the waterway right next to the bed of the river or canal, was an indispensable part of the transport infrastructure in earlier times. Before ships could move using motor power, horses ran along the bank and pulled the ship against the current. This was called "treideln", and this is how the "treidelpfads" got their name, which has been passed down to this day. Where these paths directly on the bank have been preserved, they are often used by hikers and cyclists.

I am not a sports cyclist I cycle for fun short distances up to 30 km home and away. and because it is necessary for shopping and something to see in a city so that the camper can stay at the camper place or camping. but this was a nice trip with a terrace a chat and back to Carcason. there is only one disadvantage you cycle the same way back when you drive there. So on the way there you look left on the way back right or the other way around then it is solved.

At 90 meters high, it is the highest waterfall in the Aude department. For a bird's eye view of the fall, you have to go to the hamlet of Cubserviès. There is no access to the foot of the waterfall.

The Canal du Midi is a nice place, to do with the family it's peaceful. A bit monotonous in the long run but why not for a part too if you are solo and like variety!

Part of the circuit of "Villages perched in the Black Mountain", Roquefère is a magnificent example. Set between two steep mountain sides, this tiny village has only 77 inhabitants at the last census. It is dominated by the castle built on a rock protuberance. The latter offered a surveillance point on the road between Carcassonne and the Albigeois. Its origin dates back to the 12th century, and it has undergone only a few changes in its configuration since feudal times, apart from the two square towers and the south facade redesigned in the 17th century. The castle has always been occupied since its origins. It now belongs to a private person. You should also know that you will find a drinking water tap on the small square next to the road, right next to a fountain with a metal wheel (see photo).

The Fresquel lock is in reality a series of locks: a first double structure followed by a single one. There are therefore three pools, each with a separate guard house. The locks were formerly lined with plane trees. Today, cyclists with allergies can cycle with complete peace of mind!

This towpath takes place on a very pleasant and green unpaved path. That said, after prolonged rains it can get quite muddy. In this case, take the parallel road to avoid the soft and greasy terrain.

I can only agree with F71. I experienced something similar after rain. Not only is it greasy, the mud gets caught between the mudguard and the tire and brakes like a concrete block. Constantly scraping away the mud is necessary, otherwise you won't get anywhere. However, I experienced my brief evasion onto the street as dangerous. But this section of the cycle path has one good thing. . . very scenic!

This waterfall is made up of several levels and flows over a total height of 90 meters. Only the first waterfall is visible. On this site of around ten hectares, a path is proposed around the Rieutort stream, its dry stone terraces and various built elements. The most beautiful view of the waterfall is obtained from the hamlet of Cubserviès. A belvedere has been set up to admire the waterfall and its 45-meter drop. The origins of the Cubserviès waterfall We find in this area of the Montagne Noire a very hard rock, gneiss, and another much softer: schist. Over the millennia, the Rieutort has dug its nest in the schist valley, but the hard rock has withstood erosion well. As a result, at the point of contact of these two rocks, one still present and the other greatly reduced by erosion, a large drop forms which gives rise to the waterfall. Downstream from the waterfall, the Rieutort continues its course towards the south-east and flows into the Orbiel, a left bank tributary of the Aude. The steep slopes in the immediate vicinity of the waterfall are covered with thickets of chestnut trees. The old farmland located higher up is covered with young forests of pines, larches, spruces and douglas. In summer, this forest cover provides shade and coolness appreciated by hikers. source: (https://espacesnaturelssensibles.aude.fr/la-cascade-de-cubservies)

Nice and navigable stretch of canal, much easier than around Béziers. Very picturesque.

Attention! On this unpaved stretch of road, it can be very nice (m / w) ierig. After a long rain the alternative: road is strongly advised.
