The lake is 28 km long and has a water volume of 215 million m³. The dam was built between 1926 and 1932 for flood protection and to generate energy. It is 205 meters long, 65 meters high and 47 meters wide at the base. It is located in the northernmost part between the Bleiberg mountains. The reservoir got its name from these mountains.

The small Blankenstein (Saale) train station is ideal for Rennsteig hikers. Unfortunately, the route does not continue all the way to Bavaria.

The Hirschsprung, high above the Höllental, offers a wonderful view of the valley and the surrounding area. It can be reached on foot via various hiking trails.
