Saalburg is really beautiful - right on Bleilochstausee and surrounded by forests and hills. So you have everything: water sports and hiking areas. Luckily the water quality is right again. Older people may still remember the deep aerators and the cloudy water of Lederfabrik Hirschberg or Papierfabrik Blankenstein. Now the environment fits again through strict conditions - and well ... the leather factory was settled after the turnaround ...
Here you can even make a cruise: I think with the only inland "cruise" ship in Europe - so with cabins and overnight. I find funny :)
Pedal boats, canoes, paddle boats and, for some time, larger rafts with an electric motor can also be rented. In Kloster there are even 2 large houseboats in the middle of the water with all comfort as a holiday apartment.
In 2019 the reservoir has been well filled for several years. Due to construction work on the barrier wall, the water level was lowered for eternity. Now it is also possible to go by boat to Harra. We have not even done that as a local, but we have it firmly on schedule this year!
To mention for techno fans: Here is the SMS-Festival (Sun Moon Stars) with annually tens of thousands of visitors. So then the pretty contemplative Saalburg is more of a big city;)
For families with children, I recommend the fairytale forest, with all sorts of fairy tale characters, amusements and animal enclosures. A climbing park on Pörizscher side is also available. Unfortunately, the open-air cinema no longer exists.
In any case, we are often in the area around Saalburg on the road and I can recommend walking and cycling here only.
