The view across the Daugava to the National Library of Latvia in Riga is impressive. The so-called "Castle of Light" (Gaismas Pils), a modern masterpiece by Latvian architect Gunnar Birkerts, stands out with its striking, pyramid-like shape. The building is not only an architectural feature, but also symbolizes the transmission of knowledge and the pursuit of enlightenment.

Seen from the opposite side of the river, modern Riga appears in harmonious contrast to the old town.
