Almost 200 meters above the village you have a premium view - logically. The fortress is also pretty well preserved but unsecured. That means there are rocks and pieces of wall lying around everywhere. I thought it was great.

These forts are collectively known as koulés and koulédes (pl). Their presence is a testament to the enormous undertaking undertaken by the Turks after crushing another Cretan uprising in 1866-69. To prevent further uprisings for independence, the Ottoman troops occupying the island built a chain of such forts all over Crete.

These types of fortresses were built by the Ottomans
They were made to suppress the Cretan Revolution between 1866 and 1869. In this way, surveillance of the areas and supplies from the sea or inland were ensured. In 1867 and 1868 the Ottomans attacked Agia Roumeli at the entrance to the gorge. They then built four fortresses in the wider area, of which this one remains in good condition. The castle was large, rectangular, with a rampart to the west and two round towers.
