Shortly after the entrance, it goes down in serpentines. This is also where the traffic jams the most when buse wisely people start the tour.

The first 600 meters of altitude you hike on a relatively steep serpentine path, the "Xylóskalo" - in German "wooden ladder" down. But it is well developed and secured at the difficult places with railings. Nevertheless, surefootedness is required.

Should something happen, mules wait in several places to collect the injured and transport them to Agia Roumeli. Theoretically, the entire route in the Samaria Gorge is controlled by forest officials.

There is a paid parking lot at the northern entrance. Here came. You can also buy the bus tickets for the return trip from Sougia. What is recommended.

A must for hiking fans in Crete. The first 4 km is only downhill over hill and dale, the paths are very uneven, sure-footedness and hiking boots are essential.

Strenuous descent with beautiful views of the valley!
It descends from about 1200 m to the end of the valley by the sea at the village of Agia Roumeli.

At the end of the gorge it can get very hot because the humidity in Agia Roumeli is very high. Take enough breaks to avoid overheating!

The starting point can be reached by car and bus, but I would advise against the car as it is difficult to get back (unless you hike back there).
