After the fall of the Wall in Germany in 1989, Schmidtbank opened branches in Saxony and Thuringia. A dense branch network was established in the 1990s, especially in Vogtland and the Ore Mountains and in the cities of Chemnitz and Zwickau. In Bamberg and Leipzig, platforms for a new market presence were created in 2000 and 2001 with the establishment of new branches, and in Dresden with the purchase of the local branch of Weberbank. The original aim of the expansion was to concentrate exclusively on lucrative and low-risk investment business with wealthy customers.
