Verden (Aller): Structure Road | With its richly decorated gable, the "Ackerbürgerhaus" in Verden is one of the most magnificent buildings of the "Weser Renaissance" in the northern Weser area. Typical are the figurative and ornamental carvings and the fan rosettes common in the German Renaissance.

The Low German hall house built in 1577 is colloquially referred to as the "Ackerbürgerhaus", although the size and shape of the interior is more like that of a stately building.

Henricus Elvers, notary and vicar at the church of St. Andreas, had the house built at the time. The chronicle reports that Duchess Charlotte Sophia von Kurland (1651-1728), imperial abbess at Herford Abbey from 1688, spent her exile (family disputes over inheritance) in the house from 1703 until her death.

The city had the "Ackerbürgerhaus" completely renovated in 2004 at great expense.

The half-timbered house is one of the most magnificent examples of a 16th century Low German hall house in the northern Weser region.

Although the size and shape of the interior rooms make it more likely that it is a bourgeois house, the elaborately carved exterior is based on original designs by contemporary artists and is based on the model of the aristocratic buildings of that time. The house has changed surprisingly little over several centuries. It is a unique document of the building activity in the city at that time during the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The house is popularly known as the "Ackerbürgerhaus", even though it was probably never used as such.

"Hinricus Elves me ftc", (i.e. `Hinricus Elves made me´), is how the clearly legible inscription on the lower beam begins. The upper sills are decoratively decorated with tendrils and foliage in a flat cut. In contrast, the plank fillings under the window have rosettes and star patterns.
