The house at Structure Street 16, which has been vacant for months, has new owners. A businessman from Bremen will use the listed building privately with his family, says Daniela Schneider from the Verden real estate agent Engel&Völkers on request. Schneider did not want to say whether the purchase price of 620,000 euros originally demanded by Hagens' community of heirs was achieved.

The new owners have acquired a house with 442 square meters of living space spread over twelve rooms. The building, constructed in 1844, has four bathrooms and stands on a 2908 square meter park lot overlooking Aller and the garden of the neighboring Superintendency. According to Schneider, the move-in is planned for spring 2013. Before that, the house will be renovated in close coordination with the preservation of historical monuments, with craftsmen from Verden being the main focus. The buyers, who wished not to be named, wanted to preserve the original character of the house.

Carl-Christian von Hagens admits that it has actually suffered a little after various modifications. He should know, after all he was born in the house and was its last occupant since his mother died in 2007. After World War II, refugees were admitted, and in the 1960s the house was divided into several apartments. "A toilet was installed at the beginning of the 20th century," says von Hagens. It was imported from London and was the first of its kind in Verden. "Before there was an outhouse in the yard," he reports. The first bathroom was not installed until the 1950s.

The "Wilhelm-Busch-Balcony" is accessible from the upper floor, whose rooms have a ceiling height of 3.80 meters. It is called that in the family because the famous poet and painter Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908) often spent the summer time in Verden in the last years of his life - in the house Structure Street 16. There were family reasons that lured him to the Allerstadt: His Nephew Adolf Nöldecke was a teacher at the Domgymnasium, which was already renowned at the time, and Busch often accompanied him there.

When Wilhelm Busch was in Verden, he had long since written down his legendary stories about the cheeky rascals "Max and Moritz", "Fromme Helene" and the sauerkraut-loving "Widow Bolte". They had been published with great success. In Verden, Busch enjoyed the fame of his late years and the idleness of a man who had nothing left to lose. In his notes, the poet recorded: "I was in good hands in Verden. I often went for walks in the beautiful old garden, where the fruit just spluttered." The following diary entry may also reflect how well he felt: "The morning pint was always excellent."
