On the edge of Skārņu iela, between St. Petri Church and the convent courtyard, the famous Bremen Town Musicians make music: the donkey, standing on its hind legs, barks, the dog that has jumped on its back barks, the cat that has climbed on the dog lets her Hear meow, and the rooster, who has escaped his fate as a soup chicken, sits on the cat's head and lets out his “Kikeriki” at the top of his throat. But these Bremen town musicians don't stare at the robbers' feast. You look through the crack of the “Iron Curtain” that was erected during the Soviet era and the Cold War.

The political sculpture “The Town Musicians of Bremen” is a work by the Bremen artist Christa Baumgärtel. It was based on the motifs of the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, but with a completely new content and political subtitles. The sculpture was created at the time of the Perestroika begun by Michael Gorbachev and under the impression of the events triggered by it. The sculpture was a gift from Riga's twin city, Bremen, in 1990.
