The market square in Bad Doberan is one of the oldest urban centers in the city and was planned and laid out under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I. It is considered a central historical square that served not only as a trading center but also as a representative site for the city's development. It was designed in the neoclassical style by the important architect Carl Theodor Severin, who also played a key role in the development of the summer residence in Heiligendamm.

The wide, fine sandy beach runs eastwards and slopes gently towards the Baltic Sea. This makes it particularly suitable for families with children. The beach has been awarded the “Blue Flag” because of its good water quality.
