The Aa River meanders through a natural depression in the landscape here. Since 2000, this depression, approximately 52 hectares in size, has been used to temporarily store water when flooding from the Aa threatens. From the grass banks surrounding Starkriet, you can see the abundance of water stored there. Traditionally, "the Starkriet" was submerged for much of the year. This led to the development of peat and swamp forests with willows and alders. After the Aa was straightened in the 1960s, the Aa water could drain more quickly, and Starkriet became largely pastureland. The Starkriet was still too wet for arable farming. You can walk through the Starkriet when the water level is low.

Near Someren-Eind lies a so-called inundation area, an area that can be used during high water. The Aa, Eeuwelse Loop, and Staakrijt streams (could this be the origin of the area's name?) flow through the Starkriet area (also sometimes called Staakriet).
