Waiting for the Lock Near Steenbergen lies the restored Benedensas lock complex. Since 1824, the locks protected the land behind it from high water from the Volkerak. They also bridged the height difference for shipping. The lock is called Benedensas because it lies on the lower reaches of the Vliet, unlike—indeed—the Bovensas. Don't be misled by the - at first sight - private character: it is indeed private property, but walking through it is allowed. The view is great, but keep in mind that the wind always has free play in this open landscape...

This fort is easy to walk around. A path through and around the fort allows you to catch a few glimpses. The former Fort Henricus is hidden between the polders and the Vliet. From 1627, Fort Henricus protected the harbor and lock in Steenbergen, putting an end to the sieges of this town. Fort Henricus could accommodate up to 450 soldiers and ensured that Steenbergen was an impregnable fortress. At 11.5 hectares, this fortress was one of the largest in the southwest of the Republic of the Netherlands. And you can discover it all by yourself!
