Gemert Castle is one of the village's most striking historical buildings. The complex dates back to the 13th century and was owned for centuries by the Teutonic Order, which had its commandery here. Because of this long history, you'll find a mix of architectural styles on the grounds: medieval elements, an impressive gateway, later residential wings, and a moat that encircles the entire complex. The castle itself is not freely accessible, but from the road and surrounding paths, you have a beautiful view of the walls, towers, and gatehouse. The surrounding area is charming, with old tree-lined avenues, water features, and historic outbuildings that complete the setting. It's a pleasant place for walkers to stop and take a photo or soak up the tranquil atmosphere around the moat.

This small field chapel on the outskirts of Gemert is dedicated to Saint Gerlach of Houthem, a saint venerated primarily by farmers and agriculturalists in this region. Gerlach lived in the early Middle Ages. Originally a knight from Houthem, he gave up his luxurious lifestyle after the death of his wife. After a long pilgrimage, he chose a secluded life and, according to tradition, even lived for a time in a hollow oak tree. The Gemert field chapel honors this hermit saint and forms a tranquil spot in the landscape. Hikers often stop here to observe, take a break, or light a candle. The chapel is located near the Boerenbond Museum (Farmers' Union Museum) and is well-maintained by volunteers.

The Holy Blood Mission Convent was built in 1903 for the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood. The complex consists of a large convent building, a chapel, a convent garden, and various outbuildings. The convent is known for its peaceful location on the edge of Aarle-Rixtel and its impressive neo-Gothic architecture. A large parking lot is located in front, making it an ideal starting point for walks. For many years, the sisters were active in care, education, and missionary work. The grounds have a serene, secluded atmosphere, typical of monastic life in Brabant.

This highlight is incorrectly positioned, or at least I couldn't find the monument at its designated location. It's probably closer to the Mission Monastery.

Every cross reminds us of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became human out of love for us. At the same time, however, such a small sacred monument is always also a Christian symbol of redemption and the Easter hopeful perspective of the 'eternal life' that awaits us after death. "Eternal life, after all, attempts to give a name to the great unknown through faith," Christiane Völker once wrote, and continues: "We... then sense that this eternity is not just another succession of calendar days, but something like a fulfilled moment of immersion in the infinite love of God, in which there is no time, no before, and no after."
