The excavation site at Schorbach provides fascinating insights into the history of Roman settlement in the region and is a rare example of Roman architectural technology. The focus of the excavation is a Roman site known from aerial archaeology and an Iron Age settlement site documented by finds. The site includes the remains of the foundations of a building from the 2nd to 3rd century AD. It is still a mystery what purpose it served. The construction is particularly notable for the ingenious water flow beneath the building: a stone channel runs directly beneath the foundation walls and is evidence of sophisticated, targeted water use. This type of construction probably served not only to supply water, but also to ensure the stability and possibly temperature regulation of the building. Stone channels added later in the area show that the issue of water flow remained important in later centuries. Roman engineers and settlers had apparently already recognized how essential the control of water flows was for the habitability and longevity of their settlements. Those who visit the site will find a piece of history in the remains of the Roman canal system that makes the craftsmanship and engineering skills of the Roman Empire visible.
