The fortifications of the city were probably begun in 1347 at the behest of Emperor Charles IV and expanded until the beginning of the 16th century. Weiden's first wall, built when the founding city had already existed for fifty years, was initially 1.80 meters wide and had no projections. It had four gates. Presumably prompted by the Hussite Wars in nearby Bohemia beginning in 1419, these fortifications were reinforced: A moat wall barely half as high was added to the high main wall with its walkway, to which battery and shell towers were attached. Large defensive towers were built at the four corners of the city. Large sections of the medieval city wall, some of them still with the covered battlements, have been preserved in the alleys "Hinterm Zwinger" and "Hinterm Wall."

With the construction of the medieval city wall around 1350 at the behest of the German Emperor Charles VI, the city gates were also built. The Upper Gate in the western part of the old town even temporarily had a drawbridge over the moat that had been created at that time, which connected it to the Waldnaab River. The gate was reinforced and rebuilt several times, and finally, in 1911, due to the widening of the street, it was completely demolished and rebuilt in a simplified form. It has remained in this form to this day.

Weiden sculptor Günter Mauermann created the fountain named after him from granite and bronze in 1985 and 1986. The fountain is designed as a picture arch with a veil of water, providing colorful insights into the town's history and Upper Palatinate customs. Its shape is intended to evoke the two gates between which the fountain is located.

The originally Gothic church was first mentioned in 1341, when King John of Bohemia granted the right to occupy the church to the Waldsassen Monastery. Its history probably dates back to the 12th century. The first Protestant pastor is documented in 1535. In 1627, the church was taken over by the Jesuits during the re-Catholicization process, and from 1633 to 1899, it was used simultaneously by both denominations. Max Reger served as organist at this church from 1883 to 1889.

St. Joseph's Church is considered the largest post-medieval church building in the Diocese of Regensburg. The neo-Romanesque basilica was built in just 18 months between 1899 and 1901. The painting by Munich painter Franz Hofstötter, created a few years later, and the interior furnishings, which are attributable to the Art Nouveau style, make St. Joseph's Church one of the most important and largest Art Nouveau churches in Bavaria.

A beautiful park, located directly outside the city walls. Well-kept paths and flowerbeds, cozy and secluded seating areas, a lawn, and areas along the water's edge make the park pleasant and worth a visit. During the summer months, Max Reger Park hosts the "Weiden Summer Serenades."

Looking across the Stadtbach stream from Kurt-Schumacher-Allee and the New Town Hall, you can see the southwest corner of the old city fortifications, including the main wall, the moat wall, the corner bastion, and the shell tower. Unfortunately, it is not possible to determine when Weiden in the Upper Palatinate was first fortified.

A document from 1347 records the instruction of Emperor Charles IV that the burgraves of Nuremberg should improve, build and fortify the Floß and Parkstein fortresses as well as the market town of Weiden. It was at this point at the latest that Weiden in the Upper Palatinate received its first wall, but it is possible that an existing city wall was raised and reinforced by the addition of towers. Parts of the city wall are still there.

It is hardly surprising that the furnishing of the Catholic St. Joseph's Church in the heart of Weiden took 14 years. The abundance of what was created in Art Nouveau more than a hundred years ago is overwhelming. There is always something new to discover on the pillars, walls and ceiling. The paintings range from the roots of faith in our homeland (pictures of messengers of faith on the walls of the transept) back to the first stories of the Holy Scripture with the various creation stories. The idea that the world is actually entrusted to man as a garden where he should prosper (painting with Adam and Eve in paradise to the right of the left side altar), and that all life is a gift, God's creation (Adam is brought to life by the breath of God, relief above the entrance from the church to the Sacrament Chapel, to the left of the left side altar), is little known to "modern" people. The church offers the opportunity to

The Protestant parish church of St. Michael in the heart of Weiden's old town has a varied history. The originally simple hall church was extensively remodeled by 1448 into a Gothic church in the middle of the town cemetery. The building was badly damaged by the two town fires in 1536 and 1540, so that it had to be re-vaulted in 1561. After it collapsed in 1759, the tower was rebuilt two years later. Today, the Protestant parish church of St. Michael appears in all its glory as a magnificent baroque church that should not be overlooked on a sightseeing tour through the historic old town.

Between the Upper Gate and the Lower Gate lies the market square, which was named "The Ring" in 1489. In the middle, the Old Town Hall captivates with its unmistakable charm. The "Upper Market" with its beautiful gabled houses from the period after 1540 extends between the Upper Gate and the Old Town Hall. Between the Old Town Hall and the Lower Gate is the "Lower Market", which serves as the location for the four large annual fairs that have been held since 1396, and the weekly and farmer's market that takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Many of the town houses display Renaissance style features.

In historical times, there were particularly elaborate and prestigious defense structures in the area of the Upper Gate. The gate complex consisted of the gate tower, the front gate with two mighty round towers and a nearly 16 m long stone bridge that once led over the city moat. The core of the gate tower probably dates back to the 13th century. It was demolished in 1911 and replaced by the Upper Gate, which still exists today.

Upper Gate The Upper Gate was built at the same time as the Lower Gate in around 1350 when the medieval city wall was built. A document from Charles IV from 1347 records that the city of Weiden was to be fortified. The Upper Gate has existed since this time at the latest. The construction of the Zwinger wall required the construction of a front gate. When an additional ditch was dug between the Waldnaab and the northwest corner, the gate was given a drawbridge. On the other side of the ditch, a semicircular roundel was built, which initially consisted of palisades. This was demolished again when the ramparts were built in 1634 and replaced with a triangular rampart. Another reconstruction took place a short time later in 1641, when new ramparts were built. A stone bridge was built over the city moat around 1783. The gate with a double hipped roof was demolished in 1911 to widen the street and rebuilt in a simplified form. Houses were built to the left and right of the former stone bridge. This still exists under the pavement and the three bridge arches are used as cellars. The gate stumps have the same function, as the round front towers were also demolished in the 19th century. Source: www.wikipedia.de

7月 31, 2024, St. Josef Church (Weiden in der Oberpfalz)
Parish Church of St. Joseph The parish church of St. Joseph was built in 1899-1900 by the then rapidly growing Catholic parish of the town of Weiden under parish priest Max Joseph Söllner. To make the construction possible, a Bavaria-wide church collection was even approved at the end of 1896. The design for the new church building was by the Munich architect Johann Baptist Schott, who was one of the busiest church builders of the late historicism period in Bavaria. Schott chose a strict architecture for St. Joseph, based on Romanesque models. The exterior building, with its monumental two-tower façade, is effectively set in the street line in terms of urban development. The parish church of St. Joseph is a three-aisled church with two mighty integrated front towers. The transept, inserted between the nave and the choir, closes on both sides with a semicircular apse. For urban planning reasons, the church is oriented to the north. The exterior is structured by round-arch arcades and pilaster strips, which are connected by round-arch friezes. The four-storey, richly structured towers end in triangular gables, above which the pointed tower roofs rise. The dimensions of the church are: length 64 metres, width 25 metres, width of the transept 35 metres, height of the nave inside 18 metres, height of the towers 63 and 64 metres. The baptismal chapel at the main entrance on the left seems like a wonderful reception room to the visitor. The nave is decorated with figures from Old Testament models. The adoration of the Holy Trinity is impressive in the apse vault. The centre and heart of this church is the golden high altar, designed like a magnificent reliquary. The five mysteries of the joyful rosary are depicted in relief images. The twelve apostles are presented to us in the chancel as witnesses of faith. St. Joseph's Church owes its unique fascination to the contrast between the neo-Romanesque architecture and the Art Nouveau furnishings. When entering the church, every visitor senses the mysterious atmosphere and the sacred dignity of the space, which invites inner peace and gives a sense of eternity.
