St. Martin's Parish Church The four-story tower dominates the Lengenfeld skyline. Its octagonal belfry, set back from the lower stories, is crowned by an onion dome. The nave, rising from a rectangular base, is covered with a gable roof. St. Martin's Church is a three-bay wall-pillar church. The eastern lower story of the tower has always housed the cross-ribbed vaulted chancel. A massive barrel vault spans the main space. Large, heavily sculpted, rectangular wall pillars structure the exterior walls. Their faces are enlivened by round-arched niches for figures. Large segmental arched windows illuminate the interior and create a harmonious atmosphere. The high altar, spanning the width and height of the church, presents an expressive architectural design. Six composite columns with gilded bases and capitals form the organic framework of the altar structure. The altarpiece depicts St. Martin's veneration of the Virgin Mary and Child. In the lower left of the painting, an angel holds a panel depicting the former view of Helfenberg Castle before its destruction by fire in 1796. The altarpiece is inscribed G. Asam 1703. Figures of saints stand before the column niches. The side altars are consistent in style and composition with the high altar. The altarpieces also originated during the Baroque renovation of the Lengenfeld parish church and, according to a note by Ph. M. Halm, are the work of the painter Johann Gebhard von Großprüfening. They depict the Transfiguration of St. Sebastian and the Adoration of Christ by Saints Catherine and Dominic. The cross altar on the south side of the nave, which comes from the chapel of Helfenberg Castle, likely dates from the mid-18th century. It depicts the Crucifix, Mary, and angels with the instruments of Christ's Passion. The baptismal font, preserved from the medieval predecessor church, is likely to date from the 13th century. A recently constructed iron grille, decorated with acanthus leaves and ornamentation, serves as a visual barrier to the nave. As with today's bear species, female cave bears were slightly smaller than males. The weight of a male cave bear is estimated at 600 to 1200 kg. This meant that male cave bears were heavier than a bison or a Cape buffalo.
