At the foot of Cerchov, the highest mountain in the Bohemian Forest, lies the climatic health resort of Waldmünchen. The border town has a history spanning over 1,000 years. Despite the destruction caused by wars and fires, the town has always been rebuilt. The medieval structure of the town centre has been preserved in the layout of streets and squares to this day. As a recognised climatic health resort, Waldmünchen has promoted tourism as a second economic pillar. A highlight is the annual festival "Trenck the Pandur" in July and August. Over 150 kilometres of marked hiking trails invite you to cross-border hikes.

The Waldmünchen town hall is an impressive building. The exact date of its construction cannot be determined. It fell victim to the severe fires in 1658 and 1708 and could not be rebuilt until 1717. The town hall was built in its current architectural style in 1907 and was extended in 1986 by the "Stadlerhaus" with a three-storey cellar. The carillon, donated in 1986 by the citizen's medal winner Josef Dietl, can be heard from the town hall tower. Every day it plays his favorite melody "Die Schwirzer vom Landl". At 5 p.m. the melody "Is Feierabend" can be heard.

History of the city of Waldmünchen According to tradition, Waldmünchen was founded by monks around 910. Around 1240 "Monacum ante nemus Bohemorum" became a town, it belonged to the Counts of Schwarzenburg. In 1266, Ottokar of Bohemia devastated the city and country. In 1317 the town belonged to the Counts of Leuchtenberg. In 1364 Waldmünchen already had a city wall! In 1433, the Waldmunich nurse Pflug defeated the Hussites near Hiltersried. In 1492 the city rights (=privileges) were renewed again. In 1510 Waldmünchen became "Electoral Palatinate", and in 1527 the city was the end point of the mounted Prague court post office. In 1615, Thurn and Taxis built the Imperial Post Office in the city. In 1628 the Upper Palatinate and with it Waldmünchen fell back to Electoral Bavaria. In 1658 a large part of the city burned down. Leopold von Habsburg and Elector Ferdinand Maria seal a secret treaty in Waldmünchen at the same time. In 1742 the Pandur leader Franz v. d. Trench the city, and by paying contributions it will be spared from looting. In 1764, Waldmünchen lost a large hinterland to Austria (Bohemia) as a result of the "Prague Border Treaty". The “Böhmertor” is the last of three city gates to be demolished. In 1895 the city received a local railway line to today's district town of Cham. At the end of the war in 1945, 30% of Waldmünchen was destroyed and the Iron Curtain fell across the border. In 1950 the “Trenckfestspiel” was performed for the first time. In 1962 the Schwarzach river was dammed to form the Perlsee. The city receives the title of “state-recognized climatic health resort”. In 1972, the Waldmünchen district was dissolved during the regional reform. The city grows with incorporations to around 7,500 inhabitants. In 1983, the Waldmünchen youth education center was built from the old nursing home, the former district office and rectory. After 45 years of the “cold war,” the “Iron Curtain” fell in 1990 and the old Höll border crossing was reopened. In 2001 the city got its Grenzland- und Trenckmuseum and in 2004 Waldmünchen's "parlour" received a new face with the redesign of the market square.
