Rothenburg o.d.Tbr. was bombed on March 31, 1945 by 16 American aircraft that were unable to fly to their original target due to fog. 39 people were killed and the part of the city to the east of the market square was almost completely destroyed. In the years after the war, the city was rebuilt almost true to the original, so that we can experience this unique, medieval city as it appears to us today.

The Rödertor was the eastern boundary of the city. The road out of the city continued to the Schießwasen on the Brühl and, from the middle of the 16th century, to the city's new cemetery. In front of the gate tower there is a fishing yard, two stone bridges that now replace the former drawbridges and two gatekeeper's houses that were copied from those at the castle gate. The Rödertor got its name from the former small hamlet of Röder, which was just outside in this direction.

The landmark of Rothenburg, the “Plönlein”, translates as “Small Square” or “Small Square at the Fountain” and describes the location with the crooked yellow half-timbered house in the middle, the fountain in front of this house and the Siebersturm on the left side, as well the Kobolzeller Tor from 1360 on the right. The Plönlein is the most popular and probably best-known photo motif in Rothenburg and, for many, represents the typical Rothenburg old town motif, which is known worldwide. Big Disney fans will have a little déjà vu when watching Plönlein. The Plönlein was Walt Disney's source of inspiration for PINOCCHIO from 1940.
