The 13th-century Nordby Church was built in the midst of four villages that were then on the North Island. As a result, the church is just outside of Nordby and townspeople may have trouble hearing the church bells. Therefore, a simple bell tower was built on the village square as early as the 17th century. The current tower was built in 1857. The bell rang the sun up and down, during services and other church activities, or in the event of a fire, which posed a grave threat to the village's many thatched houses and farms. Today the ringing of the bell is done by a volunteer ringing guild.
