If there's a lot of traffic on the ascent and descent, you should keep a close eye on whether someone is dislodging rocks or debris further up. That can easily happen there. You certainly can't go wrong with a helmet, but no one was wearing one.

Lake Butzensee was a highlight after the descent, with 32 degrees Celsius. The ascent doesn't require any climbing, just a lot of scree and loose stones. So it's not an action-packed climb, but the view and the lake make up for it all.

A wonderfully clear mountain lake that offers refreshment, especially on warm to hot hiking days. If you take the circular hike up to the Braunarlspitze counterclockwise, you can treat yourself to a little cooling off or simply a quiet moment of relaxation after several hours of hiking. The water is easily accessible from all sides, so you can spread out and find your own quiet spot. The stones along the shore are quite sharp. If you plan on dipping more than just your feet in the water, you might want to consider packing a pair of lightweight beach/bathing shoes. The water is typically cold for a mountain lake, even on very hot summer days. However, I did see a "hardy" person swim in it for two minutes.

Here, hiking becomes climbing, walking becomes feeling your way. The path clings to the wall like a thought you'd rather not think through to the end. Narrow, rocky, exposed. No room for doubt, but plenty of room for the wind. And this wind carries stories with it. Of game that once crossed the ridge, and of hunters who knew what it meant to lose themselves in the terrain to find themselves. The path is secured today, with wire ropes and markings, but it still plays with the feeling that more is required here than surefootedness: trust. In your own feet. In the stones. In the purpose of the path. Up above, on one of these ledges, when the view becomes expansive and your breath short, you might understand why people are drawn here again and again. Not because of the panorama—that's just the externals. But because of this small, unplanned moment when everything fits together: rock, light, heartbeat.

Lake Butzensee, crystal-clear and motionless – like a forgotten eye of the sky. Framed by stone and silence. The Mohnenfluh looms like an oversized guardian, but the lake remains unfazed. It knows no hurry, no noise. Only reflection. Here, time briefly holds its breath. Not a breath of wind ripples the water, no animal breaks the scene. Only the hiker – a shadow on the shore. And if you're brave enough, take off your shoes, dip your foot in, and feel it: the cold is real. And so is the moment. Lake Butzensee isn't a place to swim – it's a place to linger. One of those rare spots where you don't have to do anything but be. And perhaps, if you dare to be still enough, you'll even hear it: the murmuring of the stones, the silence of the mountains, and somewhere in between – your own heartbeat.

The path winds upward, narrow as a thought, between meadows that become scarcer with every meter of elevation. The air becomes clearer, the sounds less frequent. At some point, all you hear is yourself: your breath, the crunch of your shoes on the gravel, the quiet murmur of your own doubts. The pass itself isn't a grand gesture. No cross. No railing. No bells. Just a breath of wind that touches your forehead like a greeting from another world. To the left, the terrain drops steeply; to the right, the rocks draw closer. And straight ahead: expanse. Up here, you don't just see the mountains—you see what they do to you. How they shift your perspective. A scree field becomes a landscape. A step becomes a decision. A shadow becomes a story. The vegetation eventually surrenders. What remains is stone, sky, and the feeling that you've taken a step closer to yourself. Not spectacular. But true. Those who continue on will enter deeper into the alpine terrain—towards Hochberg, Braunarlspitze, or simply further on. And those who stay can experience how quiet it can become here. So quiet that even their own gaze begins to whisper.
