Closed Mondays so plan accordingly

This is one of England's tallest remaining maypoles. It is a striped pole that stands over 20 metres high. It has been present since the days of Shakespeare, and its original incarnation was made of wood (until it was struck by lightning and destroyed). The current pole is made of aluminium and is officially a Grade II historical monument listed by English Heritage.

A recent "renovation" has covered half the Greenway (the half closer to Stratford) in loose pea gravel. It is an uncomfortable and unstable ride and very frustrating compared to the much nicer second half, even if the second half is narrower and has a few potholes here and there. Best to come prepared for that.

My tip is......Don't start this walk from here. The original route on Komoot showed the start point as being at 'the bus station'. There isn't a bus station and there isn't any parking. This was the best, safest and nearest spot I could find. A small cut in outside the sewage treatment works 😳 I would recommend starting at Dorothy's Wood at the other end of this walk. There is a car park there that asks for donations rather than charging for parking. And it doesn't close until 9pm.

Stratford Greenway is a former railway (the Honeybourne Line) transformed by Sustrans into a surfaced, multi-user path. Traffic-free other than a few road crossings, it runs for 5.3 miles (8.5km) from Stratford-on-Avon train station south through peaceful countryside to the village of Long Marston.

Great food and lovely people.

Good for leisure cycling. Traffic free connection between Meon Vale and Stratford. From here plenty of routes into the Northern Cotswolds open up. Not so suitable for sports cyclists, due to the track surface and the mixed use.
