Plön's landmark, visible from afar from all approaches by land and water, was built during the Thirty Years' War between 1633 and 1636. Duke Joachim Ernst of Plön had a brick castle erected on the site of the old, now obsolete, castle. It received its white paint in the 18th century under the Danish King Christian VIII.

The large Plön Lake is divided into two basins: the eastern Plön Basin and the western Ascheberg Basin. The small Plön Lake borders it to the north. The shores of the large Plön Lake are wooded, and several bird species can be found on the many islands. A visit to the Princes' Island is highly recommended!

Nice place for a break with a magnificent view

In Plön and the surrounding area, there are cormorant colonies that sometimes cause damage to vegetation and fisheries. The island of Sterin in the Great Plön Lake is a well-known example of the destructive effect of cormorant droppings, which virtually destroy vegetation. There was also a cormorant colony on an island in Lake Selent, which was later abandoned and subsequently recovered.
