The Abbey of Saint-Maurice, in Valais, was built 1500 years ago as a sanctuary raised on the tomb of the martyr Saint-Maurice. The town of Saint-Maurice, located on the Rhône at the end of Lake Geneva, is tucked away at the foot of a looming rock face and is known for its rich past. The place, inhabited since classical antiquity, grew into a stronghold of Christianity at the end of the 3rd century AD. The abbey, the oldest monastery in the Avondland, which has been inhabited since the beginning of its existence, is now home to about forty Augustinians and a renowned school, with about a thousand students from all over French Switzerland.

The Abbey of Saint-Maurice, also known as the “Abbaye de Saint-Maurice d'Agaune”, is located in present-day Saint-Maurice de Valais in the canton of Valais. The Abbey of Saint Mauritius was founded in 515 by King Sigismund and recognized by Charlemagne. It is the oldest abbey in the West that is still active. The canons who live here continue to practice perpetual prayers. The abbey is located on a site that was once the Roman settlement of Agaunum in late Roman times and the early Middle Ages. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and has a special significance in the history of Christianity. The abbey is home to a wealth of works of art and historical artefacts. The trésor (treasury) is worth a visit, as are the surrounding chapels. The abbey has more than 1,500 years of history and has played an important role in religious and cultural affairs over the centuries.

Le Refuge de Chalin is an unguarded refuge in a spectacular location in the Dents du Midi. The refuge is essentially a very rustic cabin, don't expect fondue or espresso! What the shelter loses in hospitality, it makes up in location. An excellent ridge walk takes you to a high point at the head of Chalin, overlooking the Chalin Glacier and Pointe Nevé. It is possible to stay overnight in the shelter, but make sure you follow the correct procedure to do so.
