Culminating at an altitude of 2,321 metres, it marks, with the nearby Col de Balme, the bottom of the Chamonix valley to the southwest and rises above Vallorcine to the northwest. Boundary marker no. 3 marks the border which here forms a right angle between the Col de Balme to the southeast and the Plan des Reines to the southwest. The sources of the Arve are located on the sunny side of the mountain, just below the summit. On its shady side is Lake Catogne.

The Col de la Gueulaz, which peaks at 1,965 metres, hosted the 2016 Tour de France. The views of the Emosson dam and Mont Blanc are breathtaking.

Less brightly colored than its big brother on the lower floor, it is nevertheless interesting and the path that goes up to it (alternative to the road) is absolutely magnificent.

After passing through the tunnel from the dam, the lake opens up before our eyes.

Very beautiful summit overlooking Lake Emosson and offering a beautiful view of the Mont Blanc and all the glaciers. The climb is very pretty, and ibex can be seen early in the morning on the pass below the summit.
